The Coalition on Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) was set up in 2022 in response to the Paris Call on Research Assessment and the EU Council’s Conclusions on Research Assessment and Implementation of Open Science. CoARA’s French Chapter was launched in 2023.

CoARA announced the results of the First Call for Cascade Funding at the start of November last year. This initiative’s objectives are to support organisations in implementing the commitments set out in the agreement and reforming their own research assessment practices. CoARA promotes comprehensive and qualitative peer reviewing for individuals, groups and projects.

25 projects were selected in 3 different categories:

  • Institutional Pilot Projects which enable organisations to test new assessment models and approaches in targeted field. A selected project can receive up to €30,000 for a one-year period.
  • Teaming Projects which facilitate exchanges of knowledge between organisations with varying levels of expertise. These projects are generally awarded funding of €40,000, also for a one-year period.
  • Institutional Change Projects which involve a more in-depth reform of assessment structures in compliance with commitments set out in the Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment. Selected projects are eligible for funding of up to €60,000 for a one-year period.
