The White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) has announced new actions to drive open and equitable research. These particularly include new funding, an improved research infrastructure, more opportunities for young researchers and increased opportunities for public involvement.

In August 2022, the same Office updated US policy guidance to make the results of taxpayer-funded research immediately available to the American public free of charge. This served as the basis for policy guidance aimed at ensuring open, immediate and equitable access to federally funded research, encourage collaboration and innovation and increase public trust.

Federal agencies have been asked to update their open access policies and implement these by December 31st 2025.

New actions include:

  • A new online resource for the public to find out about emerging open science initiatives and federal government funding opportunities and programmes: https://www.science.gov/
  • The new National Institutes of Health policy for data management and sharing. This policy requires researchers to develop a management plan and maximise the appropriate sharing of scientific data.
